As long as this change doesn’t break the actual URL the listings connect to, that’s fine.

A redirect of a URL that leads to the same page may sometimes confuse the search engine but this is possible to do.

The site’s now back up but please only work in the dev environment moving forward to avoid another break.

We haven’t made any changes on your site as we recommend the redirect option only.
However, the Divi Builder is getting a timed-out connection error upon trying to edit the page as we also wanted to check the behavior of those buttons since they are opening your old URLs.
If you wanted to just redirect all the links with /category/ to the same page, you can try this regex redirect:
Source: category/events/(.*)
Type: Regex
Destination: https://www.studio188.com.au/whats-on/
