Web Stories Sitemap issue

Hi there, I have just started creating Google Web Stories via their plug in. I’ve set up a new analytics property for them in my GA4 and inserted the analytics code into the plug in. I’m trying to also connect it to Google Search Console. I found the web stories site map in RankMath settings (https://sallysees.com/web-story-sitemap.xml) but when I open the link it is a 404 error. I’ve inputted the site map to Search Console, but it hasn’t been able to ‘fetch’ it.

I haven’t selected ‘Include this post type in the XML sitemap.’ Do I need to do this? Or can my web stories live in a separate site map to the rest of my posts?

    Thanks so much.

  • Hello, we apologize for the inconvenience you’re experiencing with the Web Stories sitemap.

To resolve the issue, you need to ensure that the Web Stories are included in the XML sitemap. You can do this by enabling the “Include this post type in the XML sitemap” option in the Rank Math settings.

Here’s how you can do it:

    1. Navigate to your WordPress Dashboard and go to Rank Math SEO → Titles & Meta.
    2. Look for the “Web Stories” post type and enable the “Include this post type in the XML sitemap” option.

Once you’ve done this, the Web Stories will be included in the XML sitemap, and you should be able to fetch it in Google Search Console.

If you encounter any further issues or have additional questions, please feel free to let us know.

    Hi there,

If I enable “Include this post type in the XML sitemap” will it be part of my normal site map, or will it still fall under the unique web stories sitemap (https://sallysees.com/web-story-sitemap.xml)?

Do I need to submit the specific web stories site map to Search Console, or will it fall under my main sitemap already there?

    Thanks,

    Sally

    Hello,

Yes, the web story sitemap going to be included in your main sitemap (sub-sitemap).

You should submit your main sitemap index only, and Google will use that to crawl your sub-sitemaps:

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.

    Hi Reinelle,

Oops, I already submitted the web stories site map to Google Search Console and it says its status is ‘success’. Is there a way I can delete this sitemap from Google? I can’t see an option to do that. I hope I haven’t mucked anything up.

    Thanks,

    Sally

    Hello,

To remove a sitemap from Google Search Console you can click on it and then delete it by clicking the 3 vertical dots at the top of the page near the link that says “Open Sitemap”.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.
