Hi, our sites where affected by malware and after cleaning up japanese hack we are getting too many 404 not found errors in search console’s not indexed pages category.

As most of them were ended by .html we have set 410 redirection in rankmath pages that where producing 404 errors. after some time 404 pages in search console has descreased but then still increased.

We have rescanned server and it’s clean, free from malware.

    1. If 410 codes tell google that urls are permanently removed from webpage, why do they still remain in search console so much time? (about 2 month passed).

Also one thing, there where some 404 pages appeared in rankmath 404 monitor and which also appearing in search console. What do you think if someone makes fake requests which leads to 404, it may encourage crawlers to crawl requested urls, even if url is not in sitemap? (So they will not find anything and produce 404 errors)

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

Please note that this process will take months to complete as Google is knowingly slow at de-indexing pages from SERPs.

If all those dummy pages from the malware are now returning a 404 or 410, there’s nothing else to do other than wait for them to be removed from SERPs.

Also, if you have done everything in this guide to fix this issue, there is nothing else to do but wait for Google to recrawl and reindex your content.

You may have to continue maintaining your site until search engines regain trust in your content.

Regarding the 404s appearing in the 404 Monitor, we do not have information on how or why they are generated.

However, you can get further insight into them by enabling the advanced monitor at WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > General Settings > 404 Monitor:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/monitor-404-errors/#advanced-404-monitor

That will give you more information like referrer and user-agent. You can use that information to track down the source or find out if it is just bots generating those errors.

You can also add them to the exclusion list at WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > General Settings > 404 Monitor > Exclude Paths:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/monitor-404-errors/#404-monitor-exclude-paths

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.
