I need help figuring out how or why my web site name shows as a previous name, we renamed from TeachThought PD to ThoughtStretchers Education late last year. I have changed it in Rankmath and WordPress and everywhere I know how to but it still shows the old name in search results and in the Rankmath settings. It was showing as just the URL in Google search results until this week when it reverted to the old business name.

  • Hello, I’m sorry to hear about the issue you’re facing with your website name showing as a previous name in Google search results. It seems like you’ve already updated the site name in Rank Math and WordPress, but it’s still displaying the old name.

To ensure that Google displays the correct site name, you need to update the site name in the WebSite structured data on your site. Here’s how you can do it:

    1. If you have Rank Math, navigate to WordPress DashboardRank Math SEO and enable the Schema module.
      Enable Schema in Rank Math

    2. Once done, head over to Rank Math SEO → Titles & Meta → Local SEO and fill in the required fields, including the Website Name and Website Alternate Name if applicable.
Head over to Rank Math SEO

After updating this information, you may need to wait for Google to crawl your site or follow some best practices to inform Google of the update and get your site crawled quicker.

If you’ve already made these changes and are still experiencing issues, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will assist you further.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to resolve this issue for you.

Yes, I still need help. This Loom recording shows the new name, ThoughtStretchers Education, in Rankmath Local SEO and in the WordPress settings but in the SEO analyzer section it shows the old name of TeachThought PD and TeachThought Professional Development in two places.

I need to know how or where it is pulling that from so I can update it please.

Thanks, I did those steps and the old business name of TeachThought PD is no longer showing but now it only shows the URL, wegrowteachers.com, and not the listed new business name of ThoughtStretchers Education.

How can I get Google search to show ThoughtStretchers Education in search results instead of the wegrowteachers.com URL?

    Hello,

Please note that Google uses a machine learning algorithm to generate the Sitename for your pages based on other information it has collected about your website and your industry.

We would suggest to keep on mentioning the desired title on both the title of the page and the schema structure (which our plugin automatically adds after configuring the Local SEO settings in Rank Math > Titles & Meta).

Also, please go through the Google guidelines about the site name to help you increase the chances of displaying the desired site name on the SERP: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/site-names

Moreover, it is completely up to Google, and even if your site has followed all the guidelines, they can still decide to show a different or no site name. You should keep working on improving your site’s content quality and authority to increase the chances of your site name appearing in the SERPs.

    Looking forward to helping you.

Ok thanks but I’m confused why somehow Google recently started using my previous business name again until I took the steps to Clear SEO Analysis and Remove Transients as suggested. Surely “ThoughtStretchers Education” is simple and concise enough, right?

    Hello,

The report you see from the SEO Analyzer has nothing to do with the current information shown on the SERP.

As long as you already added the preferred keyword or name of your website within content, meta tags, and schema, it’s up to Google to honor that.

You may give it a couple of days and let us know if you see any improvements on the SERP.

    Looking forward to helping you.

Thanks, so far it is still only showing the URL, not the site name. When you mention “content, meta tags, and schema” can you clarify exactly what you mean, please? I want to be sure I’m not missing something.

    Hello,

    Thank you for your patience.

Content means on your posts/blog posts, and pages where you are mentioning your site name anywhere in the paragraph or headers.

In meta tags, the site name is already correctly outputted by Rank Math and you can check the page source as well and search for this tag:

    <meta property="og:site_name" content="ThoughtStretchers Education" />

You will also notice in your schema that Rank Math already adds the site name under the Organization property:

    script type="application/ld+json" class="rank-math-schema">{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"Organization","@id":"https://wegrowteachers.com/#organization","name":"ThoughtStretchers Education"

As we have previously mentioned, it is still completely up to Google, and even if your site has followed all the guidelines, they can decide to show a different or no site name.

You should keep working on improving your site’s content quality and authority to increase the chances of your site name appearing in the SERPs.

    Looking forward to helping you.

I’m still seeing our url instead of the sitename in search results. Is there anything else you can suggest? Our content quality and authority are good because we’re on the first page in SERPs but the name is the issue.

    Hello,

    Thank you for your patience.

Please ensure that the Local SEO module is enabled on your WordPress dashboard > Rank Math > Dashboard

    local

And that you have already included your sitename and altername on these fields

    fields

If you have already done that, then it is already up to Google if they decide to show your desired sitename on the search results pages.

As Google states in its guidelines:

Allow time for re-crawling and re-indexing. Remember that it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after publishing a page for Google to find and crawl it.

    Looking forward to helping you.

I enabled local SEO as you suggested and it has been almost two weeks but still the URL shows up in SERP instead of the sitename. Any other suggestions?

    Hello,

Since you have already followed all the guidelines to add the site name in the meta tags and Schema, you will have to wait for Google to decide to show it in the SERPs. If they don’t want to show it, then there is nothing else you can do.

You should also add the Website Alternate Name that is different than the Website Name in the Local SEO settings of our plugin and see if Google picks that and starts to show it in the SERPs.

Please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

I don’t have an alternate name. Should I enter the same name in that alternate name field?

    Hello,

No, the field should have a different name. If you don’t have an alternate name, then you should keep the field empty and wait for Google to start showing your sitename in the SERPs.

Please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

    Hello,

Since we did not hear back from you for 15 days, we are assuming that you found the solution. We are closing this support ticket.

If you still need assistance or any other help, please feel free to open a new support ticket, and we will be more than happy to assist.

    Thank you.
