Sitemap Not Updating With New Page

    Rank Math free

    Hello,

I recently updated my “About” page because the URL read “https://tinykitchenhub.com/sample-page/” instead of “About”. Google has indexed this page but when I try to edit the URL the page disappears from the sitemap. I then tried to create a new “About” page with the correct URL but Rankmath’s sitemap won’t update. The page is now missing from the sitemap and the indexed page is now showing a 404 error, which is not good for my seo. When I republish the old page it pops up on the sitemap. The page is set to index and I have tried flushing the sitemap cache but that didn’t work. How do I get the sitemap to update with the changes? Can you help?

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting the support and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

First of all, I would deleting the sample page and doing a 301 redirect of /sample-page/ to /about/ page so that the user don’t land up in 404 error page. Slowly, after the next crawl, Google will remove the sample-page from the SERP.

For sitemap not getting updated, would you please follow these steps:

    1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:
    https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp

    2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

    That should fix the issue.

Please let us know if that does not. We are here to assist.

    Hello,

I would like to also add that by checking the canonical of your about page, it seems that you have added a custom canonical URL.

Rank Math by default inserts the URL of your page as the canonical URL automatically to help search engines know that it is the “preferred” URL to rank for that page.

For additional troubleshooting, please remove the custom canonical URL upon editing the page:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/url-not-in-sitemap/#custom-canonical-url

Its purpose would be to inform search engines that it is a duplicate page and should not be indexed. It is assumed that the canonical URL is custom, and we do not include that in the sitemap.

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.
