Search Console Cant fetch sitemaps – not indexing pages

    Rank Math free

    Hi,
I am using rankmath and generating the sitemap.

Search console however is not reading the sitemap with an error
‘Couldn’t fetch’ and the further details of ‘Sitemap could not be read’

When I browse to the sitemap URL I can see it.

The sitemap has been on search console for weeks and tried submitting many times, but the error persists.
What I found a bit odd as that rankmath was giving us the nginx warning re sitemaps, however when checking with my ISP they said we are not running nginx at all.

Could this have something to do with it?
COuld there be an error in the setup that it thinks we have nginx but we are something else?

    Thank you,
    Tarquin

  • Hello,

I apologize for the issue you are facing with the sitemap not being read by Google Search Console and showing a “Couldn’t fetch” error. Thank you for providing detailed information about the problem you are encountering.

Based on the information you provided, it seems like there might be a discrepancy between what Rank Math is detecting regarding your server setup and the actual server configuration. This could potentially lead to issues with how the sitemap is being served.

To address this issue, I recommend checking your server configuration to ensure that the necessary rewrite rules are correctly set up for the sitemap to be accessible. Even if your ISP mentioned that you are not running Nginx, it’s still worth verifying the server configuration to rule out any discrepancies.

If you are unsure about how to proceed with checking and adjusting the server configuration, please refer to our knowledgebase articles on troubleshooting sitemap issues on Apache and Nginx servers:

I had a look at the new links in this thread which appeared and calidated the xml which rankmath made.
    I get an error.

    Incorrect http header content-type: “” (expected: “application/xml”)

How do I fix this? Rankmath is creating the sitemap and while I can browse to the URL , I cannot see that file in my FTP which is strange.

    Please advise

    Thank you very much,
    Tarquin

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Could you please share your sitemap URL with us so that we can check the issue further for you?

Meanwhile, please try to follow the steps below and see if that works for you:

    1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:

    2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

Once done, clear your website cache, remove all the submitted sitemap, and resubmit only the /sitemap_index.xml in the Search Console.
