From your screencast, it is the actual behavior when you are viewing the regex redirects.
However, since they are regex, you should use the actual URL instead of viewing them as it only results in codes showing in the browser.
The example you have checked is https://dev-penn-pair.pantheonsite.io/people/trainees/(.*)
To verify if it works correctly, you can add any word and replace the characters like this: https://dev-penn-pair.pantheonsite.io/people/trainees/myexample1, and you will see how it redirects correctly to the destination you set.
Moreover, the characters in regex redirect are nothing but a set of characters that help find a pattern within a piece of text. It allows matching any number of URLs dynamically without even knowing what the URLs might be.
