Rank SEO meta descriptions aren’t appearing in Google search results

Last month, I updated the meta description of a bunch of pages of our ATRI website, but Google isn’t showing the new meta descriptions in Google search results.

For example, if you go view the source code of this page https://atri.usc.edu/groups/ you’ll see that it has:
<meta name=”description” content=”ATRI researchers are behind every major Alzheimer’s clinical trial over the last three decades.”/>

And yet, every time this page shows up in Google search results, Google pulls in one random line of text from the page instead of pulling in the “meta name=”description” content” line of text that I just posted above.

Please let me know what’s going on, thanks!

  • Hello,

I apologize for the issue you’re facing with your meta descriptions not appearing in Google search results. I understand how important it is to have accurate and relevant meta descriptions for your website.

Based on the information you provided, it seems that you have correctly updated the meta description in the source code of your page. However, Google is still pulling in a random line of text from the page instead of using the specified meta description.

There could be a few reasons why this is happening. One possibility is that Google’s cache has not been updated to reflect the changes you made. To check this, you can view the Google cache for your page. Here’s how:

    1. Go to the Google search results page and find your website’s listing.
    2. Click on the small, downwards-pointing arrow next to your domain.
    3. Click on “Cached” to view the details.

If the cache date is from before you made the changes to the meta description, you may need to wait for Google to re-crawl and re-index your page with the updated meta description.

It’s also important to note that Google has the discretion to choose whether or not to use the meta description you’ve provided. Sometimes, Google may ignore the custom meta information and show something from the page’s content that matches the search intent better.

Additionally, there are some common reasons why Google might not use the meta description you’ve provided. These include:

    • The meta description is not relevant or lacks quality.
    • The exact same meta description is used across multiple pages.
    • The meta description doesn’t match what the user is searching for, but other content on the page does.

If your pages fall into any of these cases, fixing them could help reduce the chances of Google rewriting your meta descriptions. However, ultimately, it is up to Google’s discretion to display the title you’ve provided.

If you believe that the alternative text provided by Google is not a better fit than your specified meta description, you can let Google know through their Search Help Community.

I hope this information helps clarify why your meta descriptions may not be appearing as expected. If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to our support team directly here. We’re here to assist you.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Best regards,
