mailto occurs in 404 monitor

    Hi,
    we use on our website the possibility to add “mailto” in our text to ease the process for visitors to write us an email. I installed rank math today and gain first experience with the 404 monitor. Now I receive several logs regarding pages which have a “mailto” or “tel” in it. Is my assumption right that these cause the 404 error? According to your guidelines I read I would assume I should ignore them. However, is there any possibility to prevent such errors from popping up? I expect to receive several of them every day and don’t want to make up my mind whether this is due to “mailto” or “tel” or not.

    The mailto and tel links are not supposed to cause 404 errors, as they are not actual URLs but protocols to open email or phone applications. However, some browsers or devices may not recognize them and try to load them as web pages, resulting in 404 errors.

    You can safely ignore these errors, as they do not affect your website’s SEO or performance. However, if you want to prevent them from showing up in the 404 monitor, you can use the Exclude Paths option in Rank Math > General Settings > 404 Monitor.

    You can add mailto and tel as exclusion rules, and Rank Math will not log any 404 errors that contain these terms.
