Issue with Outdated Links

    Good afternoon,

Just under a year ago, one of the websites that I manage changed companies. Our entire website was deleted and replaced by one developed by the new company. The only thing that remained the same was the domain.

We are running into major issues in regard to indexing pages on Google. Google is still attempting to crawl and index the old/non existent pages. Some of our URLs are very similar to those of the old website, which is causing several errors including “Page with redirect” and “Crawled-currently not indexed.”

I have attempted to specify canonical URLs for the current pages. Rank Math’s chat told me to simply use 301 redirects and Google’s removal tool to remove the outdated links; however, there are over a thousand outdated links that Google is trying to index. Our old website used an RSS aggregator which created a link for every news story that it obtained. As far as Google’s URL removal tool, I have been led to believe that this is only temporary, and not a permanent removal.

I am unsure if our former company had our domain registered with Google. When we moved to the new company, we were led to believe that we needed to re register our domain with Google Search Console.

What is the best plan of action for removing these outdated links, and resolving our issues with redirect?

    We appreciate it! Thank you!

  • Hello,

I apologize for the issues you are facing with outdated links causing indexing problems on Google. It seems like you have a significant number of outdated URLs from the previous website that are still being crawled and causing errors like “Page with redirect” and “Crawled-currently not indexed.”

To address this issue effectively, here is a recommended plan of action:

    1. 301 Redirects: As suggested by Rank Math, using 301 redirects is a good approach to redirect traffic from the old URLs to the corresponding new URLs. This will inform Google that the old URLs have permanently moved to new locations. You can set up 301 redirects in Rank Math by going to Rank Math > Redirections in your WordPress admin dashboard.

    2. Canonical URLs: Specify canonical URLs for the current pages to indicate the preferred version of similar content. This will help Google understand which page is the original and should be indexed.

    3. Google’s URL Removal Tool: While the removal tool is temporary, it can still be used to expedite the removal of outdated URLs. However, since you have a large number of outdated links, it might be challenging to remove them all manually. In this case, focusing on setting up proper redirects and canonical URLs is crucial.

    4. Re-register Domain with Google Search Console: If you are unsure whether the domain was registered with Google previously, it’s advisable to re-register it with Google Search Console. This will give you access to valuable insights and tools to manage your website’s indexing and performance.

By implementing these steps, you can gradually resolve the issues with redirect and outdated links. If you need further assistance or encounter any challenges during the process, feel free to reach out to our support team directly from here.
