HTML sitemap in Google search results

Easy newbie question. I’ve used HTML sitemaps in past to help visitors (and search engines) find pages on my website, but now have your xml sitemaps that seem to do that.

I just submitted website to Google search console and I see that my html sitemap shows in search results (first item) when I use site:mywebsite.com

So should I just noindex the sitemap.html file?

Thanks. More questions to come as I figure this stuff out.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention.

HTML sitemap helps visitors gain a comprehensive understanding of your site.

However, the XML sitemaps cater to search engines. When you add new pages or content to your site, you can use XML sitemaps to notify the search engines.

If that file outranks your important pages like the homepage, then it is better to set it to noindex.

Rank Math also has a feature to create HTML sitemaps on your site:

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.
