Do I lose SEO if I change hosting companies? (Downtime due to DNS)

If I migrate a website from one hosting company to another hosting provider.
    1. Do I lose SEO when I do a website migration? I use the same domain with the new hosting provider,
the A-records would have to be changed and the website would have to be migrated. So there is a
little downtime for DNS to be changed to the new A records. The website is migrated beforehand and
then only the domain is verified with the new hosting company as a primary domain for set website
(cloudways) and then the new A records are created. After that an SSL certificate gets issued and
then it should work like before right?

    2. But what happens to the search engine optimisation because my website will also be offline for a
    while?

    And another question:
    3. What percentage of uptime, i.e. how long the website is online per year, has an impact on search
engine optimisation? so do I need to have good uptime for search engine optimisation or not? And
does maintenance work count as downtime? So does maintenance/ coming soon affect my SEO?

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention.

It’s possible to lose SEO during a website migration if it is not done correctly, it’s really important that you speak to your hosting provider and plan the migration carefully.

If your website is offline during the migration, you may experience a temporary loss of traffic, it’s important to minimize downtime as much as possible, Google might try to crawl your website during the migration and if it is not available, you will have to wait for Google bot to try to recrawl your website again.

In general, Google and other search engines expect that websites are online as much as possible to maximize search engine visibility, however, there isn’t a specific percentage of uptime that directly impacts SEO, keep in mind that content quality and user experience are more important factors for search engine rankings.

I hope that clears all your doubts.

Here are some articles you can refer to for more information:

In conclusion, changing hosting and having a temporary downtime of your website does affect your rankings but in a good way, as long as you have properly migrated your website files and maintained uptime as much as possible.

Let me know how it goes.

    Looking forward to helping you.

So in summary, it doesn’t affect SEO that much, and if it does, it doesn’t hurt SEO in the long run?
Can I basically migrate my website without my SEO suffering?

    Hello,

Yes, you can safely migrate the website to a new hosting company. These days DNS migration takes less time so there won’t be much affect on SEO also, doesn’t have much affect on SEO in long run.

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

    Thank you
