0 Images showing on Sitemap even though I have lots of images in the post feed

    Hi,

My sitemap is showing 0 images but there is a post feed on each page with at least 15 images.

Is this an issue with Rankmath?

I have included my website sitemap in the private noted section for privacy.

    Regards,
    Matt

  • Hello,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re experiencing issues with your sitemap. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It’s important to ensure that your sitemap accurately reflects the content on your website.

The issue you’re facing could be related to the sitemap settings. To address this, please ensure that the “Include Images” option is enabled in the Rank Math plugin settings. This can be found in the Sitemaps section of Rank Math.

Here’s a screenshot of where you can find the “Include Images” option in the Sitemap settings:

    Include Images Option In Sitemap

If the “Include Images” option is already enabled and you’re still experiencing issues, there might be other factors at play. It’s important to ensure that your images are properly indexed and accessible to search engines.

If you’ve already checked the settings and are still facing issues, please let us know, and we’ll be happy to assist you further.

    Best regards.

I think this setting is already enabled under Sitemap Settings > General.

It is written slightly differently to the screenshot above though. See here: https://prnt.sc/b6Smw6K1afz9

The only other thing to mention is the pages are archive pages for custom taxonomies.

Just to add to this – I have just checked the single post template too and the same thing is happening. The second URL in the private notes has a total of 109 images on the page in the content. But there is a post feed on the sidebar with two images and there is a “latest posts” post feed with 3 posts below the main content. So the images in the built in WP Gutenberg block builder image block are being counted (109) but the extra 5 are not (2 on the sidebar post feed and 3 on the post feed at the end).

So it looks like it’s something specific related to the post feed. Additionally, the theme developer has asked me to check with Rankmath support. This is what they said:

My question to the theme developer (please note that I already tried their suggestion of flushing the cache and nothing happened):
“I noticed that the sitemap for the term pages (link included in private notes) doesn’t show any images for the pages but there are lots of images with titles for each image in the post feed widget. Could this be why the URLs are not indexing?”

    Theme developer’s response:

Depends how Rankmath is calculating the image count, this sitemap is generated by it. Maybe it’s looking only in description field.

    You can try the following

    1. Flush cache (this was recommended in one support ticket)

    2. Check with rankmath support

    Hello,

Please note that Rank Math will only recognize images in the actual content of the page/post or the the_content. If the images are outside the content, then it will not be included in the sitemap.

If your images however are added using some sort of a custom field, then you can indicate that custom field in the “Image Custom Fields” option in your sitemap settings:

OK thanks. I have added the image custom fields on seperate lines like this:

    image-2
    _thumbnail_id

    But nothing has changed.

Before I go ahead and create a user etc for you to login can you help me with my main question?

All I really need is for the taxonomy archive pages to get crawled and indexed. I thought the 0 images thing might have been related to this. But maybe there is another reason they are not getting crawled?

All of the settings are correct in terms of Rankmath focus keyword, meta titles, descriptions, canonical url etc. But the pages are not getting picked up by search console. But posts seem to get picked up with no problem.

I have included a some screenshots in the sensitive data section.

I just don’t understand why Google is not even crawling these pages so they can be indexed. If you look at the screenshot for search console it says things like “Crawl Allowed? N/A” so maybe there is an issue?

    Hello,

Based on your description and the screenshots, it appears that the images in your post feeds are not being recognized in the sitemap, likely because they are not part of the main content (the_content), but rather added via widgets or custom fields.

For your taxonomy archive pages to get crawled and indexed, it’s crucial to ensure they are accessible to search engines and that their content is SEO-friendly.

If Google Search Console indicates “Crawl Allowed? N/A”, it suggests that these pages might not be accessible to Google’s crawlers.

Here are a few steps to consider:

1 . Improve internal linking to these pages from other high-authority pages on your site to increase their crawlability.

2 . Ensure that the content on these pages is valuable and unique. Thin or duplicated content can negatively impact crawl rates and indexation.

3 . Use Google Search Console to check for any crawl errors that might be affecting these pages.

Regarding the issue with images not appearing in the sitemap, we might need to take a closer look at the settings for a more technical investigation, especially because custom fields are involved.

For us to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.

Please do take a complete backup of your website before sharing the information with us.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

The theme developer said they might be able to update their post feed widget if you have any code to fix this so that the Rankmath Sitemap sees the images?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

    We checked your sitemap.

Upon checking we can see that the sitemap is a category sitemap.

Please note that only the images included in the category description are added to the sitemap.

Since you are using custom fields to add images to the category pages the images will not be counted in the sitemap.

Also keep in mind for this that we don’t have the option to include these images from ACF fields for taxonomies/category pages.

We hope that helps, and please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.

    Thank you.

Ok thanks – is there any way the theme developer can code their post feed differently to make the images show in the Rankmath sitemap? They are open to doing it if there is a way to do it.

Also, I created rank-math.php and added the filter so you should not get the “Error loading stylesheet: Parsing an XSLT stylesheet failed.”

    Hello,

The theme developer could modify the theme’s template files to include images directly within the content of category pages.

This approach would make the images part of the actual content, which should then be recognized by Rank Math for inclusion in the sitemap.

If it’s feasible, consider setting these images as featured images for the posts.

Rank Math automatically includes featured images in the sitemap, so this would be a straightforward solution if it aligns with your design and content strategy.

Another option is to create a custom integration with Rank Math. This would involve writing a custom function or plugin that hooks into Rank Math’s sitemap generation process.

The function would programmatically add URLs of images from ACF fields to the sitemap. This is a more complex solution and would require a developer with expertise in WordPress.

We hope that helps, and please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.

    Thank you.
