Since we are facing major search engine traffic drops for our website since september 2023 we wanted to ask you if there is some technical issue of how canonical and hreflang tags are implemented in our website.

Our website has 2 language, English (Default) and Spanish. However mosts of drops come to english pages, for example pages that were ranked 3-4 on search engines now lost in somewhere in 20s.

Can you please check and confirm if our settings for above mentioned tags are correct?

    Thank you for your support.

  • Hello,

I’m sorry to hear about the traffic drops you’ve been experiencing on your website. I understand that you are concerned about the implementation of canonical and hreflang tags on your website and how they might be affecting your search engine rankings.

To check the canonical and hreflang tags for a specific page, you can use the Google Search Console. By inspecting the URL in the Google Search Console, you can verify the canonical URL and see if there are any issues with the implementation of these tags.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to check the canonical and hreflang tags for your page:

    1. Go to the Google Search Console.
    2. Paste the URL of the page you want to inspect (e.g., https://www.yourwebsite.com/tag/product-1/`) into the inspection tool.
    3. Click on “Inspect URL” to analyze the page.
    4. Scroll down to the “Coverage” section and click on “Excluded” to see if there are any issues related to canonical or hreflang tags.

If you find any issues related to canonical or hreflang tags, please let us know, and we’ll be happy to assist you further.

If you need additional help or have further questions, please feel free to reach out to our support team directly from here: Rank Math Support.

Thank you for reaching out to us, and we’re here to help you with any further assistance you may need.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that this issue might have caused.

We can see that the canonical on the webpage you shared is correctly self-referencing and although the href lang tags are not controlled by Rank Math but your multilingual plugin, they appear to be set up correctly.

For initial troubleshooting of the drop in ranking, we suggest you check your Google Search Console, coverage section to determine any issues reported on your site:

If there are any issues, then please share those with us here, and we’ll be assisting you with our best effort. You can also use a tool like Imgur to share screenshots of those errors with us.

Since there have been a few algorithm updates that came from Google, you can also monitor Google Algorithm updates and ranking drops. Check if you’ve been hit by an Algorithm update of Google: https://rankmath.com/kb/google-algorithm-updates/

If it seems like you may have been affected by an algorithm update, please refer to the following guidelines on how to confirm that and fix it: https://rankmath.com/blog/google-algorithm-update-recovery/.

Let us know how it goes. We are looking forward to helping you further.

    Thanks
