Hello,
We’re sorry to hear that you’re experiencing issues with submitting your sitemap to Google Search Console. The “Couldn’t fetch” error can be caused by various reasons, including issues with the sitemap itself or how it’s being submitted.
To troubleshoot this issue, we recommend following these steps:
-
Rename the Sitemap File: According to Google’s John Mueller, changing the name of the sitemap file can sometimes resolve this issue. You can do this by heading over to Indexing → Sitemaps in Google Search Console and adding a new sitemap with the URL `https://rankmath.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/An-example-of-a-properly-configured-sitemap-2.png
-
Fix Sitemap Issues: If the issue persists, you can ensure that the sitemap is set up correctly by following the steps outlined in our knowledgebase article here.
-
Validate Your Sitemap: Confirm that your sitemap is correctly configured by using the Validate XML Sitemap tool.
-
Ensure the Sitemap is Located in the Root Folder: If you manually created the sitemap, ensure it is installed in the root folder of your WordPress installation.
-
Ensure Your Posts Are Set to Index: Make sure that your posts are set to index in the Rank Math SEO settings.
-
Flush the Cache: If it looks like your sitemap is outdated, you need to flush the sitemap cache.
-
Exclude the Sitemap From Caching: Ensure that your sitemap is not being cached.
If after following these steps you’re still facing issues, please feel free to reach out to our support team directly from here, and we’re always here to help.
We hope this helps resolve the issue. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

We tested your sitemap using this tool: https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/validate-xml-sitemap.html and no issues were detected (see image link in the Sensitive Data Section).
Please confirm that you removed all the submitted sitemaps in the Google Search console, and resubmitted only the /sitemap_index.xml in the Search Console.
If you did and the error persists, please remove the submitted sitemap again and add
?sitemap=1
and click SUBMIT:

Hello,
We’ve checked your sitemap with https://httpstatus.io/, and we can see all the variations of the sitemap URLs are returning 200 status. Please check the screenshot in the sensitive data section for reference.
Please note that only one of the 4 variations should show a 200 status code and the 3 remaining ones should show 301. If you’re not sure how to redirect these URLs then you can get in touch with your hosting provider.
Once done, please clear your website cache and submit the sitemap again to your Google Search Console and see if that works for you.
Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.
Thank you.

Hello,
I can check that the sitemap URL returns a 403 error when visiting it as Googlebot:
It seems like your server’s firewall is blocking Googlebot, and that’s why it isn’t able to fetch the sitemap. Please get in touch with your host and ask them to allow access to Googlebot to fix the issue.
Let us know how that goes. Looking forward to helping you.
