Google Search Console Issues – Couldn’t fetch sitemap

    Hello,
I’m working with a webdesign company, and we were hoping to use RankMath SEO as our primary SEO Plugin for WordPress across our clientbase. Unfortunately we are struggling to sumbit the sitemaps RankMath creates to the Google Search Console, as it keeps returning a “Couldn’t fetch” status and an unspecified HTTP-Error.
I have already tried to troubleshoot the issue myself with the help of RankMath’s guides (renaming the sitemap, making sure it’s verified, etc.), but have yet to find a solution, that works.

Is there anything else I can try?

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

Could you please share the sitemap URL so we can check it as well?

Meanwhile, ensure that the version of your sitemap (HTTPS WWW or non-WWW) is the same as the website you have verified in your Google Search Console account:

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

    Hello!

Thank you for the speedy reply.
The sitemap is found at https://dr-rahman.de/sitemap_index.xml.

Like I mentioned, I have tried multiple versions, always making sure to also update the robots.txt file to lead to the version of the sitemap I attempted to submit to the search console, such as the sitemap index, the page sitemap specifically as well as the alternate “/?sitemap=1” that I’ve seen suggested in your troubleshooting articles.

    Hello,

We’ve checked your sitemap and we can see it is working properly without any issue:

In this case, you can try to follow the steps below and see if that works for you:

    1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:
    https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp

    2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

Once done, clear your website cache and resubmit the /sitemap_index.xml in the Search Console.

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

The issue persists even after flushing the cache again and double-checking that I excluded the sitemap url(s) from caching. Is there anything else I can try?

    Hello,

    Thank you for your patience.

We’ve checked your sitemaps, and they are working fine.

Also, your posts and pages are already indexed on the search results page

    million

Moreover, not all sitemaps are processed by Google. Not necessarily because there is something wrong with the sitemap.

Even a perfect sitemap may not be processed by Google.

Most of the time it’s simply still sitting in the queue waiting for processing. Remember Google are processing millions of sitemap daily, sometimes it takes time to get to yours. But for whatever reason, Google simply never gets around to some sitemaps. It just doesn’t think it is worth it.

And Search Console sometimes shows ‘Pending’ as ‘couldn’t fetch’ incorrectly. You can check the replies of Google experts for the Couldn’t Fetch(especially for the TLDs except for .com) issues on the following threads:

    Hope that helps.
