sitemap_index.xml is blank

    https://ab-soeparken.dk/sitemap_index.xml
is blank but no 404 error.
Google Dev Tools console shows errors:
Entity ‘oslash’ not defined – main-sitemap.xsl:14
Entity ‘oslash’ not defined – main-sitemap.xsl:17

‘oslash’ might mean the Danish letter “ø” but this letter is not used in any page, post or image names – only in tag lines or descriptions and that has never been a problem (at least not before).

One curiosity is that when I added a new user in WordPress (6.2.2) yesterday, the automatic WordPress email advised ““New user registration on your site AB Søparken:”. Earlier such mails always stated “New user registration on your site AB Søparken:” using the Danish letter “ø” as we spell our name. So, does WordPress suddenly have an issue here?

I have tried all I can after following your guidance on https://rankmath.com/kb/fix-sitemap-issues/
    but cannot find any solution.
All plug-ins, incl. Rank Math are fully updated.

Any ideas what the issue might be?

    Kind regards,
    Soren

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

This issue is occurring because, on your database entries there are some Unicode characters that are preventing the sitemap from correctly loading, where you have already identified it as ø, and it is not getting correctly parsed.

In this case, please access your WordPress database and check the table wp_options.

Please fix that entry or any other similar type of entry by removing the Unicode characters. You can also just replace the entry and your sitemap should load fine.

Let us know how this goes.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

    Great advice!!

I found that the wp_options table included a record which stated “Blog name, AB Søparken” which should be AB Søparken.
“AB Søparken” is the Site Title stated in WordPress General Settings. I changed it to “AB Soeparken” (“oe” is a usual alternative to the Danish letter “ø”.
Very strange, because the original site title was active when I first used Rank Math and xml Sitemaps with no problem.
Maybe WordPress changed something in upgrades.

Anyway, many thanks for your help. The xml sitemap is back.

    Kind regards,
    Soren
