Hi Team,
After activating RankMath we encountered a critical error as follows: When we click on the “Pages” tab on our wordpress dashboard and select “All Pages” we encounter a message as follows: “There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.” We’re not sure if RankMath caused this but we noticed it happened after we activated the plugin. Any insight on this issue will be great.

Hello,
Thank you for contacting Rank Math support. We are sorry to hear that you are facing a critical error on your website.
To troubleshoot this issue, please follow these steps:
- Check your site admin email inbox for instructions. WordPress should send you an email with more details about the error and a recovery link to access your site in recovery mode. You can use this link to log in to your WordPress dashboard and temporarily deactivate Rank Math or any other plugin that may be causing the issue.
- Enable debug mode in WordPress. This will help you see the exact error message and the file or line that is causing it. You can enable debug mode by editing your wp-config.php file and adding these lines:
define( 'WP_DEBUG', true ); define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true ); define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );This will create a debug.log file in your wp-content folder with the error details. You can check this file and see if Rank Math or any other plugin or theme is mentioned in the error message.
- Switch to a default theme. Sometimes, a theme may cause a critical error due to a compatibility issue with Rank Math or WordPress. If you can’t log in to your dashboard due to the critical error – you should be able to switch to a default theme like Twenty Twenty-One by renaming your current theme folder via FTP or cPanel. This will force WordPress to use the default theme and see if the error goes away.
- Deactivate all plugins except Rank Math to see if the error remains. If you don’t have access to your wp-admin, you can deactivate all plugins by renaming the plugins folder via FTP or cPanel. This will disable all plugins and see if the error goes away. If it does, you can reactivate the plugins one by one and check which one is causing the issue.
- Reinstall Rank Math. Sometimes, a missing or corrupted file in Rank Math may cause a critical error. You can reinstall Rank Math by deleting it from your plugins folder via FTP or cPanel and then installing it again from your WordPress dashboard or by uploading the zip file from rankmath.com/my-account. This will ensure that you have the latest and complete version of Rank Math on your site.
If none of these steps work, please share your site URL and WordPress login details in the sensitive data section so we can take a closer look.
We hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. We are here to assist you.😊
Hi, thank you for your responds. Can RankMath assist in resolving this issue for us? We are not familiar with the process of troubleshooting this issue and want someone experienced to do it for us to avoid any mistakes. If RankMath can assist please advise what you need to get started? Thank you
Hello,
We strive to help you resolve your issues. We will be more than happy to look into the issue in detail and help you resolve it.
However to proceed further, We might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
Please do take a complete backup of your website before sharing the information with us.
It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/
You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-security-audit-log/
We hope that helps, and please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.
Thank you.
Hello,
I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?
Thank you.
Hello,
Please also add your FTP logins in the sensitive data section since this is a critical error. This will help us to test and revert any changes immediately if the issue comes up again.
If you need assistance with the FTP, you can get in touch with your web host and they will provide you the FTP login credentials.
Furthermore, please also ask them for your website’s error log when the issue happened on your site so we can check the root cause and troubleshoot easily.
Looking forward to helping you.
Thank you.
Hello,
I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?
Thank you.
Hello,
Thank you for those details.
I’ve tried temporarily disabling the Rank Math plugin, and the issue still persists upon accessing your Pages section. All of your data are saved in your database so there shouldn’t be any data loss upon doing so.
Also, it seems that your site’s PHP memory is getting exhausted upon checking the error log. In this case, please get in touch with your web host and ask them to increase the PHP value on your site (Memory Limit).
Moreover, I’m unable to determine any plugin/theme conflict since installing a plugin on your site is not working. In this case, you can follow the steps in this link for that or install the plugin:
https://rankmath.com/kb/check-plugin-conflicts/I have left the Rank Math plugin activated after checking your site.
Let us know how this goes.
Thank you.
