    Hi!

A a travel agency I work for (vakantietepaard.be) triggers hundreds of 404 URL’s. When diving a bit deeper, many of them seem to be pages that have been put to status ‘concept’. Mainly it involves travel destinations that aren’t offered anymore to site visitors.

Visitors will most probably not bump into those sites, but apparently crawlers do. So I guess this could negatively impact crawling budget, right? When I clicked on the rank math ‘advanced’ tab, I noticed the ‘index’ is ticked and ‘no follow’ is not.

My first idea was to correct this by ticking ‘no index’ and ‘no follow’. Is that right? And if so, do they have to go through those error pages one by one or is there any bulk solution possible? Many thanks in advance!

    BR

    Elke

It’s important to address the issue of the hundreds of 404 errors on your travel agency website, as this can indeed have a negative impact on your crawling budget and potentially harm your website’s overall SEO performance.

As you’ve noted, many of these errors are related to pages that are no longer offered to site visitors, and have been put in a ‘concept’ status. In this case, it’s best to remove these pages from the website entirely, rather than leaving them in a state of limbo. This will help prevent search engines from crawling these pages unnecessarily and wasting their resources.

Regarding the Rank Math plugin, ticking the ‘noindex’ and ‘nofollow’ options is a good solution for these error pages. This will prevent search engines from indexing these pages and following any links on them, effectively removing them from your website’s index.

There are a few options to address the issue of hundreds of error pages, depending on the platform and tools you are using. If you are using a content management system (CMS), such as WordPress, you may be able to use a plugin to help you manage these pages in bulk. For example, the Yoast SEO plugin has a feature called ‘Bulk Editor’ that allows you to modify the SEO settings of multiple pages at once.

Alternatively, you can use tools such as Screaming Frog or Google Search Console to identify and manage these error pages. These tools can help you identify the pages with 404 errors and make changes to their status and SEO settings as needed.

Overall, it’s important to address these error pages in a timely manner to ensure that your website’s crawling budget is used effectively and that your SEO performance is not negatively impacted.
