Broken Organization Schema

Organization schema that is added by Rank Math to the homepage of my website is broken. When attempting to validate the schema markup of the homepage the Organization schema returns an “Unspecified Type” error.

The full text of the error is:

“Unspecified Type (The @type is required and cannot be an empty string.)”

What is odd is that I can see “Organization” in the @type field when viewing the source code both in the schema.org validator and by manually inspecting the page.

Any help you could provide with resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

This error usually occurs when you have selected the Organization in Rank Math > Titles & Meta > Local SEO, but have not specified the Business Type field

    Local SEO

Please select the type in the drop-down and clear your website’s cache after saving. Once done, check again if the issue still persists.

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.

    Hi Reinelle,

Thank you for looking into this. I noticed that even though some information in the Local SEO settings was filled in, the Local SEO module was not enabled in the Rank Math dashboard.

I went ahead and enabled it and started filling the business information. However, it seems that Rank Math doesn’t support the business category of “manufacturer”, which is the category we’ve chosen on Google Business Profile.

Do you know if there are plans to include that business category in the future? In the meantime I will see if just using LocalBusiness will work to fix the broken schema.

    Thank you!

    Reinelle,

I figured out the problem – it was actually the Article schema that was causing the issue. Some pages on the site didn’t have an author specified (such as the homepage and contact page), and also didn’t have schema turned on for some reason. I assigned authors to the pages and manually selected Article schema in Rank Math for each page and it fixed the problem.

    Thank you!
